comedian mikey mason will kick off comedy and bluegrass night at doc’s music hall on tuesday, july 13. the show will be hosted by vinny landfert of muncie and the feature (what we call the middle act) is mike gardner, from indianapolis. show starts at 8pm, and tickets are $5 at the door.
mikey started doing comedy as a founding member of ball state university’s comedy troupe, absolunacy (now just abso) in 1992 (incidentally, this is also where he met his wife.) having been in bands from middle school throughout college mikey decided in 2005 to mesh the two and pursue standup comedy with his guitar. he began by singing his original comedy songs at karaoke nights in local bars, and got a couple of breaks in late 2005 when in october he was asked to play at the kentucky anti-folk festival in louisville, and in december was asked by jeff phipps, owner of bygones, to open for todd yohn at a comedy night.
since then, mikey has improved his resume considerably by touring the country, playing in comedy clubs and theaters in over 30 states. he recorded an album for laughing hyena records at the icehouse in pasadena, ca and played for two weeks at the atlantis resort and casino in the bahamas. he’s appeared twice at the house of blues, once in myrtle beach, sc and once in dallas, tx. just over a year ago, he recorded his current album, comedy rock star, at doc’s music hall in muncie, on his official last day of work for someone else. tuesday’s show is a homecoming of sorts, marking his one year anniversary of becoming a full-time stand-up comedian.
